The author of the book, Sten Åke Nilsson, tells the history of the building - the need for a new university building, the planning, the construction, the inauguration in 1882 and the various rooms with the auditorium as the main feature. The restorations are given considerable space, as are the sphinxes, which returned to the roof of the building in 1993, after an absence of 34 years!
A chapter is devoted to the exhibition activities at the top of the building, which began in 1898 and continued for more than a hundred years. The first Hill exhibition was organised here in 1911, GAN made its debut and Matisse passed by on his way to Stockholm.
Sten Åke Nilsson has a special relationship with the building. He enrolled here as a student in 1955, completed his PhD in 1967 and gave his installation lecture in 1981 as a professor of art history. It was about the University House and is reproduced in full in the book. As a professor, he also had his office in the so-called flag attic for a long time. The book is richly illustrated with Zettervall's drawings, other older pictures and newly taken photos by Gunnar Menander.
